From antiquated stand-alone systems to a modern all-in-one solution

To make the outdated system landscape fit for the future for the benefit of engineering and IT management: that was the program for one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of industrial trucks. In 2015, the company switched to an SAP-integrated solution.

  • Diverse stand alone solutions
  • Microsoft Access/Excel
  • ERP-System (outdated)
  • Siemens NX (native CAD)
  • PDM-System (outdated)
Many systems = much effort

The number and age of the systems in use created problems and made a lot of manual work necessary – with an immense loss of time. For engineering and IT management, the following caused the most work:

  • Multiple capture of identical data in different systems
  • Keeping assemblies intact during component changes (new file – faulty link)
  • Reuse of data because old versions were not available in the productive system
  • Managing and maintaining the large number of stand-alone solutions and self-developed tools
  • Scaling the business systems analog to the company’s growth rate
  • Upgrading business systems – due to extensive customizing measures
Time for an integrated system

An integrated business solution was intended to replace the heterogeneous old systems. The company decided on SAP ERP/SAP PLM as the central IT system plus Engineering Control Center with SAP PLM Integration for NX – both for a seamless integration of authoring tools (CAD, MS Office etc.) and for document management. The bonus of the solution: CAD users can access the SAP system directly from within NX.

Good preparation pay off

The CAD data was migrated fast and successfully into the SAP system. This was mainly due to the DSC tool ++MSIT for analyzing, filtering and optimizing the data as well as for automating the migration process. A great benefit was also the vigorous support from DSC in all necessary preliminary work. This included:

  • Identifying relevant data and defining rules for data selection
  • Cleaning up the NX data by removing anomalies and updating assembly structures
  • Adding missing CAD models and document attributes to the data
Installed, configured, rolled out

First, NX had to be upgraded to the latest version. Next, the SAP system, ECTR and NX were installed and configured according to the customer’s requirements for perfect coordination: from CAD templates and workflows to CAD document types and storage conventions to status network and versioning. Final step: rollout and go-live – site by site.

Conclusion: less is more

Now, the customer is using a single, fully-integrated system to run the business. That makes life easier not only for the IT staff: designers are also benefiting. From more time and more convenience:

  • No more repeated data capture or manual data transfer
  • Fast find and easy reuse of CAD files
  • Permanently intact assemblies since links are automatically updated
  • Direct derivation of bills of materials from the CAD structure
  • Workflow-controlled generation of neutral formats in the background
