SAP Engineering Control Center in the environment of IoT and Digital Twin
DSC’s integration platform – one more central theme at the SAP PLM Infodays featuring product lifecycle management of the future
From May 22–23, 2017, DSC was an exhibitor at the SAP PLM info days hosted by SAP Deutschland SE & Co. KG. Over 47 SAP partners and altogether more than 281 customers from 10 countries had accepted SAP’s invitation to St. Leon-Rot. These included a top-ranking delegation of customers from China as well as the Chinese SAP User Group (CSUA). For the first time, lectures this year were in three languages: German, English, and Chinese. In addition to knowledge-sharing and networking, the visitors attended lectures, break-out sessions, and a trade exhibition for information on new solutions, trends, and best practices – for the processing and manufacturing industry. The center of interest here was the digitization of the product lifecycle, in which digital and physical product worlds are increasingly converging. Day 1 focused on available solutions and the PLM successes they achieved from our customers’ perspective. Day 2 devoted to strategic issues, gave a deeper insight into individual solutions and provided an outlook on planned developments.
As an important digitization module, DSC’s integration platform SAP Engineering Control Center (SAP ECTR) was a central theme on both days – in a strategy talk and a best-practice lecture on Day 1, in a break-out session with product news on Day 2, and continuously on the DSC stand, which attracted large numbers of visitors. Many of these were customers who came to discuss and develop new ideas with the Karlsruhe integration specialists. Then there were many new and potential customers who wanted to get to know DSC’s products and solutions. In the end, it was a great success not just for DSC but also for the event as a whole: as an excellently planned event and complete success and a shining example. According to DSC, special emphasis should be placed on the fantastic SAP exhibition – with demo scenarios on diverse topics. This exhibition spread over the whole of the second floor of the event location and was a perfect complement to the extensive SAP partner exhibition on the ground floor.
A fascinating topic on product lifecycle management of the future was provided by the opening keynote: “LIVE Engineering The Next Level of PLM,” presented by Georg Kube, Global Vice President Industrial Machinery & Components, SAP SE. With reference to the Internet of Things and the IoT portfolio SAP Leonardo, Kube demonstrated how innovation and engineering processes can profit from real-time information from manufacturing, operation, etc. Dr. Juergen Weiner, Senior Vice President – P&I SAP S/4HANA Idea, SAP SE, raised this topic again in the presentation: “SAP PLM Strategy – The Roadmap to the Next Level of PLM”. He explained the SAP strategy serving to support the digitization of product development processes – through SAP PLM integration with the IoT platform. As a result, data and processes from development and operation converge and form the basis for the digital twin. The Digital Twin can be fully represented using SAP ECTR, the integration platform for all engineering disciplines: mechanics, electronics and software. In addition, SAP Intelligent Product Design provides cloud-based solutions for design collaboration and requirements management.
SAP ECTR seamlessly integrates leading authoring tools for MCAD, ECAD etc. in SAP PLM and provides a uniform, intuitive user interface. In this way, SAP ECTR simplifies the management of product data and documents as well as their links to business processes: from product development and design collaboration to manufacture and maintenance. The add-on module Factory Control Center (FCTR) provides the bridge to production: through the integration of CAM, tool management and production planning as well as through the shop-floor connection. The practical benefits of all this were demonstrated in the DSC customer lecture directly following the opening keynote. Fernand Portenier, Head of IT and Services at YPSOMED AG, spoke on the subject “Digitalization needs PLM – Integrated Data and Processes with ‘3D – ERP’ at a Medical Technology Manufacturer.” Portenier showed how Ypsomed uses SAP PLM, SAP ECTR and FCTR to ensure consistent data and processes: from engineering to document management to manufacturing control.
