Systems, Data, and Processes – unified worldwide

Sandvik Success Story

Industry

Industrial Machinery and Components

Goals

  • Implement a unified SAP system as a global PDM and PLM platform, thus enabling data to be accessed and managed across different locations
  • Enable the consistent storage and management of all locally created product data using SAP PLM
  • Ensure uniform processes for storing, changing, and approving manufacturing data across the entire company

Sandvik’s global IT harmonization project leverages SAP PLM and SAP ECTR. The international conglomerate Sandvik is a global leader in numerous subsectors of the special steel industry. The business segment of Sandvik Machining Solutions, which consists of numerous brands and companies, including 35 office locations around the globe, comprises tools and tooling systems for advanced industrial metal cutting.

Although dedicated working instructions were followed in the different offices and partially systems were used that enabled data replication, the processes and construction methods could differ, especially in the area of engineering, as could the management of product data and the release processes. Among other things, this was an area for improvement in matters of global process efficiency – a key competitive factor. In order to strengthen the market leadership of Sandvik Machining Solutions, the company decided to harmonize systems, data, and processes.

This harmonization project, which was implemented in collaboration with DSC Software AG, was based on SAP PLM, and leveraged the strategic integration platform SAP Engineering Control Center. What were the greatest challenges, milestones, and achievements in this project?
