Big software upgrade for SAP-integrated technical documentation in Heidelberg – retaining all customer-specific adaptations

Mapping processes of technical documentation with SAP PLM and Engineering Control Center – from creating documents to translation and publication: that’s exactly what the leading international partner for the printing industry, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) does. With ECTR from DSC, the company integrated its MS-Windows-based publishing tool HeiDoc in SAP PLM years ago – in order to manage the multilingual customer documentation plus spare parts catalogs securely, efficiently and transparently using the SAP system. For a long time, the same ECTR version had been used, but MS Windows and SAP versions had in the meantime changed. This made it more and more difficult to keep the integrated HeiDoc solution going. So in the end they decided to upgrade the Integration 2016: with ECTR 4.6.

The initial system environment of HeiDoc consisted of ECTR 4.0 plus Windows XP, MS Windows Server 2003 and SAP 4.6c. At some point, Heidelberg had upgraded to Windows 7 and SAP ECC 6.0 – without any problems. Following the upgrade to MS Windows Server 2008, the integrated HeiDoc solution no longer worked. This forced the company not only to continue working with the old version of MS Windows Server. It also demonstrated the potential risk of suddenly being left sitting without a functioning publishing tool after any future upgrades. Particularly with upgrades that are indispensable because, for example, the support for old versions completely or partially ran out, as happened in 2015 with MS Windows Server 2003. Against this background, it quickly became clear that in order to make the publishing tool as future-proof as possible, ECTR had to be upgraded to a technically current version.[…]
